CHAPTER FIVE

Jackson fought harder than he ever had in his life. He knew if they took him away, he would never come back, never see Addy again, never be able to prove that he could pull himself out of his depression and live here in the civilian world. He wanted that, for the first time since The Incident, wanted it so bad he fought on even though pushing his leg harder might mean he wouldn’t walk again. If only Sport were there, they’d take these men down together, no problem.

A giant tattooed man kicked Jackson in the knee, and he crumpled. Tattoo and a skinny man too strong for his build wrestled him the rest of the way to the floor. Jackson sank his teeth into Skinny’s arm, and the man screamed, jerking away, ripping flesh.

Jackson spat, shooting blood into Tattoo’s face.

The big man backhanded Jackson, and his head snapped back, but he jerked his good leg free and sent his knee into Skinny’s balls.

He struggled to his feet, thinking he had a chance, but the man he’d shot wasn’t down for the count. Without Jackson realizing it, he’d gotten to his feet. Jackson turned as the man did, but he wasn’t quick enough. The man swung and something big and hard, possibly the base of a lamp, slammed into the back of Jackson’s skull. The blow rattled his brains long enough for one of the men to force his arms behind him and another to secure them with a zip-tie. He struggled, kicking out again and again as they shoved him to the ground, not caring how much more damage he did to his leg, not even feeling the pain anymore. They secured his ankles with another tie and then Tattoo gave him a hard kick in the abdomen. He curled in on himself fighting the swift rise of nausea.

A muffled voice came over their radio. Wounded Guy responded. Jackson was fluent in Spanish, but the words made no sense. Either it was a code or else Jackson had been hit harder than he thought, because the words didn’t make sense strung together. The man who answered the call signaled to Tattoo to follow him. To Skinny, he said. “Watch him. If he moves, shoot his leg.”

“Where are you going?” Skinny asked in Spanish.

“To find us some alternate transportation.”

“Why?”

Wounded Guy got in his face. “Don’t ask questions or you’ll end up where he’s going.” He gestured toward Jackson with a gun he’d retrieved from the floor.

Skinny looked pissed off as he watched the others leave. Jackson prayed Addy had enough time to escape unseen. He wished he could see his watch. Surely Sport or someone sent by him would be here soon. Why did the men need alternate transportation? Was Sport responsible for that? Whatever was going on outside, Jackson had to escape now while only one man guarded him.

Skinny fidgeted, glancing toward the door every few seconds. His nervousness would be advantageous, because he wouldn’t be thinking clearly, but nervous men tended to be trigger happy, and Jackson had no intention of getting shot.
